We build around the courtyard — the part of a house that is not a room, and the part everybody remembers.

01 The idea

Every house we have ever loved had a hole in the middle of it. A courtyard is not wasted floor area. It is where the building breathes — where the light arrives without a window, where the rain is allowed in, and where a family ends up sitting for thirty years without ever being told to.

We are six people. We take four projects a year and we draw all of them by hand first.

03 Materials

Three things,
and the light on them.

i

Board-formed concrete

Cast against sawn teak so the grain stays in the wall. It records the shuttering, and then it records the sun.

ii

Lime and Kota

Breathable, local, and cooler than anything sealed. It ages the way the people living with it do.

iii

Teak screen

A jaali by another name. It turns a hard south light into something you can sit under all afternoon.

Aangan began in a Malleswaram outhouse in 2015 with two drawing boards and a shared plotter. We have stayed small on purpose: everything that leaves this studio has been drawn, argued over and detailed by the people who will also stand on the site while it is poured.

We work mostly in Karnataka and along the west coast, in climates that punish sealed buildings. So we do not seal them. We shade, we cross-vent, we leave a hole in the middle, and we let the plan follow the air.
